Moss Bros unveil first new label – Moss London

That Dapper Chap introduces the first new label by one of our favorite menswear brands.

Moss Bros Logo
There is now a Moss Bros store in most towns across the UK and they are a 'go to' brand for a lot of us, not just for wedding hire, which they do very well but also for suits, shirts, ties and other accessories. So, once well established it's time for something new right? Let me introduce you to Moss London.

Founded in London’s Covent Garden in 1851, Moss Bros is the British menswear retailer that continues to evolve, challenge and exceed expectations.  With growth stemming from a younger customer base wanting to dress smarter with a sense of individuality and self-expression, Moss Bros are delighted to unveil the new Moss London brand for AW14.
A suit from the Moss London range £249

For many of these customers, the purchase of a Moss London suit would be their first foray into dressing formally; with a mix of suiting and smart casual wear, this new collection endeavours to target this group with a versatile fashion forward edit of slim fit styles.

The green tartan suit, perfect for the Christmas party season
The principle of Moss London is to take influence from the hub of creativity that is London and translate this sometimes abstract style into a fresh, wearable look perfect for the youthful consumer across the UK and abroad.

The collection was launched in Moss Bros’ flagship store in Regent Street, with a live installation featuring models Michael Morgan and Sonny Henty trying on the best of the first season’s looks – in the store window.

Moss London Velvet Jacket Denim Shirt.

Key looks include a slim fit suit with contrasting inset panels of charcoal and graphite grey, a shawl collar suit in navy with leatherette trim and the bottle green tartan dinner suit as above.

Inset panelling is referenced throughout the collection, as seen on the indigo/petrol blue and sky grey/graphite panelled shirts and the black with navy inset reefer jacket.  Texture is an important element of this debut AW14 collection with key pieces including a navy velvet jacket with black paisley print and heavy gauge fabrics deployed across outerwear, waistcoats and accessories.  Plaids are dominant in autumnal shades of rust and burgundy, featuring across both shirting and accessories.

The launch of this new collection is headlined by the well-inked model of the moment Billy Huxley who epitomises the unique and the individual.  Huxley appears in a series of teaser videos for the launch as well as a selection of other brand related initiatives.

Commercial and operations director Jemima Bird said, "The idea around the brand is that London is ubiquitous. You don’t have to be from London to have the spirit of London, it’s about movement, passion and individuality. It doesn’t matter if you’re a tattooist from Liverpool, you can have a ubiquitous spirit.”
"For us, these campaigns are about changing people’s perception about Moss Bros. We are a modern retailer that has a fresh direction you probably wouldn’t have thought of."

Choose Chinos

That Dapper Chap Chats about Chinos and takes us through their history and our wearing and buying options.

A rainbow of colours. Image courtesy of Next.co.uk

We all know about chinos right? The easy to wear, cotton trousers that have crept in to every mans wardrobe over the last year or so? We all know that they've quickly become the legwear of choice for the modern man but where did it all start and how should you wear them? Let me take you on a journey.

Casual or dapper chinos are a versatile essential. Photo by Next.co.uk

Chinos: The History

With their origins deeply rooted in the military as a lot of menswear is, Chinos were a staple part of the army uniform during the second world war. With the need for a hard wearing item of clothing for the troops a twill cotton fabric was used. The name of this cloth? Well, chino of course.

Originally khaki or sand coloured to offer protection and camouflage while on the front line, chino trousers were manufactured in their thousands. After the war, huge surplus resulted in every father, brother and Son wearing chinos and we haven't looked back since.

During the 1950's America chinos saw a re-emergence with non other than James Dean and Marlon Brando wearing them

The Woodhouse hand painted jacket

Woodhouse Clothing handpicks Stone Island one of a kind hand painted jacket as key piece for AW14

The Handpainted Jacket

Premium Menswear online retailer Woodhouse Clothing is offering something truly unique for AW14: The Stone Island Brown Tortoise Shell Raso Hand Painted Jacket.
Okay, maybe you wouldn't expect to see That dapper Chap sporting such a jacket. It doesn't have a dapper edge or a vintage look but it is a very unique and that's what fashion is all about.
Selected by the Woodhouse buying team as the key piece from the Stone Island AW14 collection, this jacket has been dyed and then faded in selected areas with a corrosive paste. These bleached parts are then hand painted with a tortoise shell camouflage inspired motive. This exceptional manual process makes each piece one of a kind and unrepeatable.

Stone Island is defined by a culture of exploration, experimentation, function and use; the brand’s aim is to establish new boundaries in the garment manufacturing world and with the Raso jacket it does just that.
This is a true statement piece, maybe at home on the back of an indie rock star or fashion conscious movie star. In keeping with the rest of Stone Island’s AW14 collection, the colours used in the jacket are inspired by the organic world. Other components which contribute to the creation of this truly premium piece include the use of satin weave cotton fabric of military origin, inclusion of the finest down to keep you warm in the colder months, a contrasting down-filled detachable inner lining and an iconic detachable compass badge.

And The Winners Are....

That Dapper Chap introduces us to the winners of August #ThatDapperChap Instagram contest

The August #ThatDapperChap Instagram contest was another huge success with another 300 entries from all over the globe. After scouring the entries we chose 2 deserving winners who both with a great prize package from s-gents.com

The first prize, tie, bow tie and pocket square

Second prize is a tie and bow tie

Your Winner - Joel

We chose Joel because of his understated dapper style, frequently attired in a bow tie and, a fan of a waistcoat we loved the way he puts his daily looks together in a functional but stylish way.

Joel told me "I am a graduate student in education at Harvard university. I was a teacher for years and have tried to move the typical 'teacher style' out of its rigid, and often boring rut"

We asked Joel to tell us about his style "My style is  inspired by blue collar uniforms. I appreciate the utilitarian nature of the style and those that wear it. I am honored to have won the contest, especially with the impressive entries"

Looking dapper in his bow tie and with his leather briefcase

A well fitted suit and checked waistcoat gets top marks for the teacher

Making the dapper look modern by wearing a practical denim jacket

Looking smart in an off white blazer

Madmen style, suited and booted

Your Runner Up - Elijah

Elijah is a 19 year old chap from Atlanta Georgia and is another supporter of the bow tie!

Attending school at Savannah State University he is currently a student but in the future he hopes to have a job in the fashion industry.

We asked Elijah to sum up his style "My style can be dapper, urban & preppy at the same time. My style is very diverse. Most people look at their style from a designer & cost of the clothes point of view. To me it isn't about who designed it or how much it costs. It's all about how you make it look. Someone's outfit could cost $5,000 and it can still be unappealing. When I put on a outfit, it's usually planned days ahead. I brainstorm & deeply think about every outfit I wear. Your style defines who you are without you telling people. People will judge you just from your appearance. It isn't fair but that's life. Because of that, I dress how I want to be addressed"

The belt and braces approach

Check mate: dressing up jeans in a long sleeved shirt and tie

Playing with colours in a blue shirt and orange chinos

On trend: rolled up chinos and loafers

The right amount of prep

Find Elijah

Thank you to Joel and Elijah for taking part in the contest and once again a huge thank you to Southern gents for supplying a fantastic array of prizes. Check out their website at www.s-gents.com for a great range of mens accessories.

And dont forget to enter next month for more great prizes!

The retro print shirt

That Dapper Chap shows us todays look and talk about style influences from previous decades.

Today's look started with this retro print shirt. Not only is the print retro with it's red and navy blue elliptical, interwoven pattern but the entire design is retro. Inspired directly by the 1970s it's a great modern shirt with that vintage edge.

You'll see immediately that the collar is larger than those that we're seeing from the majority of shirts on the market. When the collar is laid flat you can see that it spreads slightly too to create more of a point at the tips, something that is classically 1970s and conjures images of bearded, long haired gents in flares and sandals and with a guitar slung over their shoulder.

Is it me or have the last few years opened up the doors to a variety of styles which cover many decades of style, but taking the best of the cuts, patterns and shapes from each and making them 'now'. We've seen a huge amount of 80s inspired clothing but none of the voluminous and illuminous vulgarities that graced the streets in 1984. We're seeing heritage styles that give a gentlemanly nod to the 20's, 30's and 40's but without the harsh, thick and itchy fabrics that they used back in the day. And even though the 90s are still fresh in some of our memories, some styles from that-no-so-far-away decade are creeping back too.

One company that is offering the best mix of the decades, that I have found, is Next. In their current collection they're offering urban styles with 90s influences, 70s print shirts, like the one I'm wearing today along with thin knit buttoned and collared sweaters, 80s influenced sweaters in block patterns and wool suits and collarless grandad shirts just like those worn by our forefathers while shovelling coal in the 20s.

So whatever decade you may favor, take the best of what it had to offer in a new way. You don't have to go the whole hog and add those cordoury flares and platform shoes with your 70s print shirt. Just team it with modern items as I have, like this skinny fit blazer and chinos. It could be argued that the blazer is 60s style and that the chinos are 50s or 80s, as they were big in both eras, but whatever mix of items you wear, it doesn't matter so long as you are wearing it well and make it your own.
